• You need to be able to fi nd a percentage of a quantity.
To fi nd the VAT (at 17.5%) that you pay on something that costs £25,
multiply the cost by 0.175
£25  0.175  £4.38 (rounding to the nearest penny)
• Percentage changes occur in practical problems.
For example, prices can by increased by a percentage, such as VAT, or
decreased by a percentage, such as a sales discount.
To increase a quantity by 5%, a quick method is to multiply the quantity
by 1.05 (1  0.05).
To decrease a quantity by 8%, the quickest way is to multiply the
quantity by 0.92 (1  0.08).
• You need to know how to write one number as a percentage of another.
Example: to write 158 as a percentage of 795:
158  795  100  19.87%
Therefore 158 is roughly 20% of 795.
Finding the percentage change
• To calculate percentage change use this formula:
You buy something for £400. You sell it for £300.
