2) Explain the use of litmus paper (red and blue) as an indicator in identifying acids and
bases
ANSWER: The litmus paper is an indicator as to if the substance is a base/acid, because
when a substance is an acid, it will turn blue colored litmus paper red, and when a
substance is a base, it will turn red colored litmus paper blue.
3) Elaborate on your findings in this lab: were the 4 unknown fluids acids or bases?
ANSWER: One chemical was a base, one chemical was an acid, one chemical was neutral,
and the last chemical was a weak base (turned litmus paper blue over time, though sample
might have been neutral and contaminated with a base.)
4) What other indicators might you use to determine more accurately the pH of the
unknown?
ANSWER: Some other indicators that might more accurately find the pH of an unknown
substance, is to use a pH indicator paper and a chart listing the colors and what pH they
are.
Conclusion: This lab showed how to test a chemical’s pH level when using colored litmus
paper. My group found that of the four substances tested, there was 1 base, 1 acid, 1
neutral, and 1 weak base/neutral (due to possible contamination.)
