Genetics
In the reading, you learned that traits are passed from parent to offspring. These traits are controlled by
bands of DNA found on the chromosomes in your cells called genes. Chromosomes come in pairs. One
half of the chromosome pair comes from the female parent and the other half of the chromosome pair
comes from the male parent. The genes on these pairs of chromosomes match up with one another. Each
gene pair controls a single trait such as eye color, height, face shape, hair color, etc. Since one half of
each pair comes from each parent, what determines the trait that the offspring exhibits? This activity is a
simplified illustration of the answer to this question.
1. You will be drawing a "face" in the space below. You will have two sets of characteristics to
choose from to make your face. Choose these characteristics from the Trait Chart provided
by your teacher.
2. Choose one of the two face shapes from the chart and draw it in the space below. Make sure
that your face is big enough to fill in all of the features.
Face- #
Eyes- #
Eyebrows- #
Eyelashes- #
Nose- #
Mouth- #
Ears- #
3. Draw in the features by choosing one of the two options you are given for each feature.
Choose one set of eyes, one set of eyebrows, one type of eyelashes, one nose, one mouth, and
one set of ears. Use only the choices on the chart. Do not make up your own features. Work
on your own. You face is not supposed to look exactly like your neighbor's.
4. After you have finished your face, your teacher will assign you a partner. You and your
partner should compare the faces you drew.
