Teaching Strategies for Different Learning Styles
The following activities are ways the basic lesson can be modified to accommodate students’
different learning styles:
English Learners (EL) Review the word detained. The pair students with proficient speakers
to answer the questions.
Advanced Learners (AL) Have students create a narrative that tells the story of one immi-
grant family going through the inspection process at Ellis Island. Encourage students to
make up the name of a family from Southern or Eastern Europe or to go to the Ellis Island
Web site to find an actual name.
Below Grade Level (BL) Introduce the activity or, alternatively, help students review the key
information on page 99 by creating a who-what-when-where-why organizer like the one below.
