Job Description: Physician Assistant in Employee Health
Position Summary: This position is accountable for assuring quality medical care for employees.
Scope:
This position will report to the Medical Director of Employee Health Service.
The physician assistant is responsible for giving complete, comprehensive pre-employment
examinations to establish a health survey and data base for every employee candidate, including
all employees and full-time students.
He or she will function as a health care provider for employees with minor emergencies. He or
she will maintain medical records using a problem oriented approach and will assure
confidentiality for all patients seen.
The physician assistant will provide instruction in safety and good health practices and will be
responsible for immunizations as approved and recommended by the Centers for Disease
Control and the hospital's Infection Control Committee. The incumbent will be actively involved in
the wellness program endorsed by the hospital and any other projects under the supervision of
the Employee Health Service Director.
The physician assistant will work directly or indirectly with the Emergency Department Physician,
as indicated by privileges. He or she is expected to recognize and interpret signs and symptoms
and initiate appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree, a certificate from an accredited
Physician Assistant Program as well as certification by the National Commission on Certification
of Physician Assistants,
plus appropriate licensure as required.
Principal Accountabilities:
The physician assistant will work cooperatively with the Employee Health physician in the
identification, treatment, and management of epidemiological problems.
The physician assistant will initiate requests for consultations for problems out of the scope of the
Employee Health Service.
The physician assistant will provide urgent care for conditions that would not reasonably require
the PA to seek immediate management by the physician, including but not limited to, suturing
superficial lacerations, immobilizing trauma victims prior to x-ray, or removal of a Table 2,
continued foreign body superficially embedded in the cornea. Initiation of emergency treatment of
cardiopulmonary arrest may be begun by the physician assistant as the physician is being called.
Other duties may be delegated by the physician depending upon experience and training as
hospital or clinic privileges allow
