Your Strategy for the Multiple Choice
In Perusal Time (10 minutes)
• Skim through the paper and decide whether the units are literacy, numeracy, visual literacy or
time bombs. Make a mental note of them.
• Choose a literacy unit that looks relatively easy and begin to work on it.
o Remember the strategy:
Read the introduction
Ignore the stimulus material
Read the stems of the first two items and the four alternatives
Read through the stimulus material until you find the answer
Mark it mentally (or with your thumbnail on the booklet)
First five minutes of working time
• Mark your answer sheet with the items you have answered mentally in perusal
• Finish that unit
• With your pencil mark each unit L, VL, N, or TB (Literacy, Visual Literacy, Numeracy, or Time
Bomb)
The rest of the 90 minutes
• Start with an easy unit in your strong area to give you some confidence
• Alternate easy and difficult units
• Leave the Time Bombs until the end, but make sure you attempt them seriously. They are not
necessarily hard, just time consuming.
• Do your thinking on in paper. Write in the question booklet. Don’t hold everything in your head.
• Use the elimination process if you need to.
• Leave no items blank. There is no penalty for incorrect answers.
Timing
• Method 1 –If each item was equal it would be worth 1 minute 48 seconds.
o Calculate the time available for each unit.
o Multiply the number of items in the unit by 2 and take off 2 or 3
o e.g. for a unit with 5 items: 5 x 2 = 10 -2 = 8
o Therefore if you can finish that unit in 8 minutes or less you will be right on time.
o Write the time at the top of the page; check your watch.
• Method 2
o Try to complete 10 items every 15 minutes
o You only have to check your watch every 15 minutes.
