Cursive technology lesson

Purpose:

To make the students understand that good handwriting is an important tool of written

communication. Hard to read writing may lead to misunderstanding, which can lead to

potentially dangerous situations. Knowing how to read and write in cursive protects the students.

It gives them the independence to know what the text is saying and not leaving room for

someone to give them misinformation.

VA SOL 3.8The student will write legibly in cursive.

Objective:

TSWBAT write their name in cursive on a piece of paper using a pencil with 80% accuracy.

Procedure:

* T he lesson is 25 minutes with 5 minutes for flexibility if needed.

Introduction (5 minutes)

Explain to the children that good handwriting is an important tool for written communication and

that hard to read handwriting may lead to misunderstanding. Ask the students what comes to

mind when they hear the word ‘cursive’ and what experiences they have with writing it. Then

ask them why cursive is important. Go over three reasons why it is important:

1. Create a signature

2. Read historical documents (e.g The Declaration of Independence)

3. Our hands will be multilingual (stimulates the brain)

Next show them the cursive alphabet on the smartboard. Point to three different letters and have

the children identify them as a whole group. Make sure to ask about upper and lower case letters.

Have each child identify one letter.

Development (10 minutes)

Bring up smartboard slide that has upper and lower case dotted letters. Tell them that we are

going to practice tracing them in the air. Have everyone stand up and hold their pencil like if

they were going to write. Walk around to check and adjust ,if needed, the pencil grip of the

students. Demonstrate air tracing the cursive letters ‘a’ and ‘A’. Now have the children airtrace
