the same letters. Hand out the ipads and show the students they have a cursive alphabet on it.
Tell them that everyone is going to come up to the smartboard to trace a letter. The others will
airtrace the same letter using their personal alphabet as a reference. Model by tracing a letter on
the smartboard and have the students airtrace the same letter simultaneously. Have a student
come up and trace one letter on the smartboard while the other children airtrace the same letter
(kinesthetic, visual). Do this until all the students (5) have had a turn.
After, have them turn on the ipad and go to the ‘cursive words’ app. Tell them that they will use
the ‘cursive’ app to practice tracing the letters of their name. Demonstrate by going on the app
and finding the first letter of your (teacher) name and tracing it. Say aloud the corresponding
number to the line path and give them permission to do this if they would like when they are
doing the activity (auditory). Tell them that by using the button ‘prev’ and ‘next’ they can find
the letters they need. Show them the button that switches between upper and lower case letters.
Let them know that after they have traced the letters in their name they will close the app and
open up another app called ‘cursive writing’. Demonstrate closing and opening the apps. Tell
them that this app is to practice writing words in cursive. Demonstrate by tracing a word. Now,
the students may start working on the activity and remember to walk around.
For struggling students:
Have them trace all the letters in the alphabet, not just the ones in their names. Moving on to
words may be frustrating.
For advanced students:
Have them practice writing cursive in the ‘Doodle Buddy’ app. Give them liberty to choose the
words they want to write.
Summary (5 minutes)
Recap why cursive writing is important, restating the three points from the introduction of the
lesson. Tell them that they will write their name in cursive. Give each child a blank piece of
paper to sign their name using a pencil. Collect the piece of paper for assessment.
