Activity 1
Prior Knowledge Skill: be able to identify a penny, nickel, dime and quarter, know the value of
each, and demonstrate a basic understanding of how they relate to each other.
Activity: Level 1
The student will package coins by given amounts to use at a later date to make purchases from a vending machine.
Present the materials for level 1 activity in the bins provided in this order from left to right: 1) bin with chart and labels,) bin with mixed coins, 3)
bin with amount cards for level 1, 4) bin with 5 baggies and, 5) finished basket. The student will remove the chart and labels from bin 1 and
match the labels to the correct name of the coin on the chart. Next, the student will sort all of the coins in bin 2 onto the chart in the correct
columns. Once the coins are sorted, the student will take an amount card (with the amount written on it from 75¢ to 95¢) from bin 3 and place the
correct coins on the card, taking them off of the chart. The student will put the coins and the amount card in a baggie and place it in the finished
baasket. The student will continue packaging the coin amounts until all 5 baggies are completed and placed in the finished basket.
Three measurable skills:
1. The student will match ___ out of 4 coin labels to the name of the coin on the chart correctly.
