Teacher Interview Reflection Page 2

When this communication is hindered, for any number of reasons, the process is far less
productive. What was the most unfortunate to hear, were the situations in which language
barriers inhibit the progression of a student's special education services. Sometimes parents
cannot communicate efficiently with school personnel due to a lack of resources or other issues.
We had discussed in class ELL students who may also require additional services. These other
issues can remain undetected because of the language hindrances. Misdiagnosis also occurs more
often within ELL groups when compared to their native speaking counterparts. Unfortunately,
the obstruction of language will not be going away soon. This is why everything possible needs
to be done to combat this impediment. Ms. Fashant had voiced concern is this area and attributed
some of the issues to lack of staffing particularly in assessing students with diverse backgrounds.
Schools need the funding necessary to keep up with their student's diverse needs.
Overall I the interview reminded me of the involvedness required to create and maintain an IEP
plan for special needs students. I am greatly appreciative of Natalie's willingness to take time out
of her busy schedule to respond to these interview questions. Her dedication was observable and
her natural ability with special needs students is something I can only wish to emulate one day.
As with any area of importance in education, changes are necessary. School funding appears to
be a catalyst in this particular district and I am sure they are not alone in this respect. Hopefully
with committed communities of people like Natalie Ashanti, we can move closer to providing
the ideal educational environment for all learners.
