Seigneurial System - a social system based on nobles (seigneurs) who rented
land to farmers (habitants). The habitants had to give seigneurs a portion of
their annual crop and pay other fees, and the seigneurs had to build a mill and
a church on their land for the farmers.
Chapter 3 — The British in North America
Mercantilism - an economic system that allowed an imperial country to become
rich by selling the resources taken from its colonies.
(Example: Britain made money by selling the natural resources taken from the 13
colonies)
Sovereignty - supreme governing authority. Britain wanted to show its
sovereignty by tightening its control over the French colonies in North America.
Chapter 4 — Competition for Trade
The First Nations, Merchants, and Fur Traders were the three major groups who
took part in the fur trade.
The fur trade was a partnership between European traders and First Nations
hunters and trappers. First Nations wanted goods from Europe, and the
Europeans valued the fur pelts from the First Nations.
Voyageurs - a Canadian or Metis employee of the North West Company who
paddled back and forth from Montreal to the trading forts in the West.
Ethnocentric - a viewpoint that judges other global cultures and ideas
according to personal values and standards; believing that ones own cultural
group is superior.
Barter - the exchange of goods for other goods rather than money.
Imperialism - a country extending its control over other countries, often using
economic or military means.
