Chapter 5 — War and Peace
Superpower a country that is more powerful than almost all other countries.
France and England were rival superpowers. Both countries were in competition
with each other for control over North America.
Treaty of Paris, 1 763 - ended the conflict between France and Britain.
Royal Proclamation Act, 1763 - laid out the British governments plans for the
colony. Their purpose was to attract Anglophones to Quebec and bring in British
institutions and laws.
Quebec Act, 1774 - resulted in the survival of French language and CuIture in
North America.
Chapter 6 — Becoming Canada
Reasons why the War of 1812 began:

Britain was at war with France
- British were kidnapping American sailors
- British were supporting First Nations in their struggle for land
- Americans wanted to take over Britain’s colonies
The Great Migration - between 1815-1850, more than 800,000 immigrants came
to BNA because:
population was growing fast and jobs we're scarce in Britain
- farmers were being forced off the land
- poverty and hunger were common in Ireland ocean travel was safer
- colonies offered free land, opportunities and a chance for a better life
Rebellions of 1837 - had a lasting impact. Reform was necessary for both Upper
and Lower Canada.
