To whom it may concern
I am writing this letter of recommendation in support of Coach Ben Pirillo’s nomination
for the TAHPERD Physical Education Elementary Educator of the Year Award.
I have known Coach Pirillo for the past 2 years as a parent of one of his students at
Hughston Elementary School. During that period I have witnessed his unique teaching
style that not only utilizes traditional teaching methods in gym class, but also the use of
modern technology in order to encourage fitness both in and out of school. Accordingly,
I am writing this because it is my sincere belief that his is overwhelmingly qualified to be
a recipient of the PE Elementary Educator of the Year Award.
Coach Pirillo is dedicated to the task of impressing the importance of physical fitness on
his students at every age level. In order to achieve this goal, he uses both traditional
methods in the gym as well as reaching out to get the students to continue their healthy
habits outside of class. Within the gym setting, he will use a mixture of traditional
warmup/stretching and fun filled game activities to get the kids active. Within the
stretching activities, for instance, he will also inject general knowledge of muscle
systems including what muscles the children are stretching and why they do certain
activities. I like that his style is not just “run and get your heart rate up”, but “why are we
running”.
With regards to the use of technology, within the classroom setting he utilizes iPads that
the kids can use with PE specific apps designed to lead the kids through activities both
on an individual and group level. In order to further reach children outside of class, he
encourages the use of technology including video and QR codes to easily access
additional games and mobile apps. Ben has set up a family friendly Youtube page
where he posts easy to follow workout videos set to music for the kids to follow along.
He also provides us with lists of websites and mobile apps to help parents extend the
love of physical fitness at home.
In addition to daily gym classes, Coach is instrumental in several extracurricular
activities. Every year he manages the school’s Field Day where the children are given a
day of organized play outside including obstacle courses, tugofwar, ball tosses, etc.
Further, he recently organized a Fitness Night where the whole family was encouraged
to attend and learn more about both physical fitness and nutrition. It was at this Fitness
Night that he gave everyone a packet with several QR codes to more easily access the
