APPLICATION FOR NATIONAL GUARD EXTENSION SCHOLARSHIP (NGES)
State Form 53414 (R / 3-09)
STATE OF INDIANA
STATE STUDENT ASSISTANCE COMMISSION OF INDIANA (SSACI)
NATIONAL GUARD EXTENSION SCHOLARSHIP
1)
Eligibility for the National Guard Extension Scholarship (NGES) began May 3, 2007, at the Governor’s signing of the law. Any former Guard
member applying for NGES must have terminated from the Guard on or after this date. Students have one year from their termination date to turn
in the Application form and a copy of their DD214 and NGB Form 22 for NGES consideration.
2)
Leaving the Guard is called termination and there can be only one termination date. Students who leave the Guard and then return to the Guard
will be eligible for 48 total units (eight semesters) of SSACI Frank O’Bannon Grant/National Guard Supplemental Grant/National Guard Extension
Scholarship in any combination provided on time and correction application is made.
3)
Student must have been in good standing upon leaving the Guard: an honorable discharge is required in order for the student to be eligible for the
NGES. The Guard will be responsible for verifying discharge status before submitting the application to SSACI.
4)
The date at which a Guard member leaves active duty is called the date of separation and a student may have several start and separation dates,
listed as start and end dates on the Application. For the purposes of calculating available units, the oldest eligible active duty start date extends not
further back than September 11, 2001.
5)
The definition of active duty is any Title 10 deployment, or any Title 32 out-of-state deployment of 30 days or greater (e.g., Hurricanes Katrina and
Rita or Operation Jump Start).
6)
NGES recipients must have applied for and used a National Guard Supplemental Grant (NGSG) prior to termination from the Guard. SSACI
determines prior NGSG use. Award history may be viewed at the SSACI eStudent website, , Award History tab.
7)
Students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the March 10, receipt date deadline and make any necessary
FAFSA corrections by the May 15, correction receipt date deadline. Both dates are subject to change in the future.
Check the SSACI website at
for current application and correction receipt date deadlines. The FAFSA must be on file with SSACI at least thirty (30) days prior
to the first day of classes. The FAFSA may be obtained at
8)
To determine eligibility for the NGES, Frank O’Bannon Grant eligibility is calculated first. The NGES acts as a supplemental grant to the Frank
O’Bannon Grant in the same way as the NGSG. If the former Guard member is also a Twenty-first Century Scholar, the calculation of these two
scholarships in combination with the Frank O'Bannon Grant will be guided in the same way as for the NGSG, meaning that the Twenty-first Century
Scholarship takes precedence.
9)
The NGES will be based on current year tuition and fees as is the NGSG. No summer tuition and fees will be covered. Part-time use of the NGES
will not be permitted. The applicant will be expected to conform to present regulations applying to National Guard scholars and Frank O'Bannon
Grant recipients (including but not limited to: Eight semester limit, maximum of 15 credit hours per semester, Indiana residency, undergraduate
status, high school graduate, satisfactory academic progress (SAP), Title IV requirements, institution restrictions, etc.) A one-time Application will
be required of the student instead of Guard recertification prior to each term. Former Guard members will need to keep their NGB Form 22 and
DD214 in case of audit. The minimum NGES award allowable after the Frank O’Bannon Grant determination will be $20 per semester, the same as
for the NGSG award.
10) If the student intends to apply for the NGES after termination from Guard service, the student must secure an Application from the SSACI website,
The student must return the completed Application to the National Guard Education Office
address indicated on the Application with the required DD214 and NGB Form 22. The Indiana Army National Guard Education Office will record
the Application’s receipt, verify all information, determine eligibility, and then provide the information to SSACI. SSACI will administer the NGES
scholarship. The Guard and SSACI reserve the right to change any terms in this program at any time. Changes will be posted with the rules and
application on the SSACI website.
11) The student receiving NGES designation must be enrolled full time and use consecutively all semesters of eligibility once enrollment begins,
excluding summer sessions.
12) A conversion table of years, months, days of active duty to SSACI units is provided below. Six units of eligibility equals one semester of enrollment
at a semester-based public college. SSACI offers up to 48 units, the equivalent of four years (eight semesters) of funding to eligible students.
