Healthcare Professional Job Description – Surgical Technologist
Job Description:
Works as a local contract or traveling healthcare professional at a Health Carousel client facility,
and in accordance with the limitations and scope of care in accordance with the applicable
state practice act. Under the supervision of the RN assists with various types of surgical
operations and performs related surgical services. Observes aseptic techniques. Prepares for
and assisting with surgical procedures‐ sets up the necessary instruments‐ supplies‐ and
equipment for operations‐ according to the routine of the surgeon. Knowledge of instruments
and sterile technique in the O.R. Assist with duties as assigned. Surgical technicians (aka, scrub
or operating room technicians) assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons,
registered nurses or other surgical personnel. Primary responsibilities include preparing the
operating room, ascertaining that all equipment is working properly and preparing the patient
for surgery. May also transport patients, observe vital signs, check charts and assist the surgical
team in dressing for the surgery. Utilizes safe practices to minimize potential exposure to
internal and external hazardous materials including but not limited to: blood and blood borne
pathogens, infectious/communicable diseases, noise, excessive physical injury from patients,
airborne dusts, fumes, and gases. Performs required duties at a high level, with minimal
orientation. May be required to “float” outside of primary nursing unit assignment to another
nursing unit for which s/he is qualified to work. Remains flexible regarding work schedule to
meet facility nurse staffing requirements.
Job Knowledge / Responsibilities:
General Duties
Provides patient care as a Surgical Technician to patients in assigned facility (or
facilities).
Prepares the operating room by setting up the equipment and sterilizing tools that are
necessary for the operation.
Prepares the patient for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting areas of
operation.
Properly cares for and disposes of tissue that requires lab work.
Records all necessary data required for lab samples and properly prepare all specimens
for examination by the lab.
Assists with transport of the patient back to the recovery room and assist making the
patient comfortable.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Documentation
Properly and accurately documents/charts observations and other data related to the
clinical condition of the patient.

Delivers age appropriate care for the patient population.
