Inviting Relatives & Friends
B-2 Tourist Visa
The U.S Department of State Consular Affairs has indicated that a letter of invitation is
not
needed to apply for a nonimmigrant tourist visa. This is clearly stated on the U.S Department of State
Consular Affairs website.
“A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a
nonimmigrant tourist visa.”
Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of their residence and ties to their home country such
as employment, property and/or family. A personal letter of invitation is not one of the factors used by
the consular officer in determining whether to issue or deny a nonimmigrant tourist visa.
Therefore, the Office of International Affairs and the Registrar’s office is no longer providing
letters of invitation. Instead, we are recommending that you send your relative(s) or friend(s) copies of
the following:
Your most recent I-20
An unofficial transcript (downloaded from CougarNet)
If you wish to provide additional documentation, you
may write an invitation letter yourself to relatives
and/or friends. This letter should detail the purpose
of their visit (i.e. vacation, attend graduation), your
relationship to the person, and the length of their
stay. The letter should be written in English. If your
relative or friend does not understand English, it may
be helpful to send a translation of the letter in your
native language in case the consular officer has
questions pertaining to the letter. A sample
invitation letter to graduation is shown on the left.
Of course, you will need to modify the wording
according to your own particular circumstance. You
should fill out a separate invitation letter for each
person you are inviting.
