REMISSION OF FEES FOR A CHILD OF A DISABLED VETERAN
The Indiana General Assembly has provided for an education benefit for the children of disabled Veterans. The Veterans disability
must have incurred during military service and be rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The benefit covers all tuition and
mandatory fees charged by state-supported institutions to eligible students, as defined by the Commission for Higher Education and
the State Student Assistance Commission. The Indiana Remission of Fees is separate and distinct from any federal Veteran benefits;
applications for those benefits should be made to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
To be eligible, an applicant must be either:
A. A pupil of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Childrens’ Home: or
B. A resident of the State of Indiana eligible for Indiana in state tuition, and whose natural or legally adoptive parent:
1.
Served in the Armed Forces of the United States from April 6, 1917 – July 2, 1921; or September 16, 1940 – December 31,
1946; or June 25, 1950 – January 31, 1955; or August 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975 or August 2, 1990 - July 1, 1999 and
2.
Sustained a service-connected death or disability as evidenced by the records of the United States Department of Veterans
Affairs, or received wounds as a result of enemy action and/or received the Purple Heart Medal, and
3.
Was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable; and
4.
Is currently and has for the last 12 months been a resident of the state of Indiana, or was a resident for at least 12 months at
the time the veteran joined the service.
Applicants are entitled to receive up to 124-semester credit hours of state grant assistance if enrolled at state postsecondary
institutions. Only the institutions listed on the Application for Remission of Fees for a Child of a Disabled Veteran or Remission of
Fees for Children of POW/MIA are eligible for this benefit. The entitlement is not limited by age of applicant and can be used for
undergraduate or graduate study. Institutions are not required to remit fees for terms completed prior to the application for the benefit.
FREE TUITION FOR CHILDREN OF POW/MIA’S IN VIETNAM
Indiana has provided educational benefits for children of veterans classified as Prisoners of War or Missing in Action after January 1,
1960. The benefit provides free tuition in state-supported institutions.
To be eligible the applicant must be:
A. The child of a person who was:
1.
A resident of Indiana at the time of entrance on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces; and
2.
Has been declared a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action after January 1, 1960; and
B. Was born before or during the time his/her father was classified POW/MIA; or
1.
Was legally adopted or in legal custody of the father or mother prior to and during the time of classification as a POW/MIA.
Application for Remission of Fees for a Child of a
Eligible applicants who meet the admission requirements of the institutions listed on the
Disabled Veteran or Remission of Fees for Children of POW/MIA
are entitled to obtain a bachelor’s degree or a Certificate of Completion
from an Indiana state funded postsecondary institution for as long as he/she is eligible, free of tuition or charge.

The period of service, disability, and status will be verified and the application returned to the student. Present the verified
