Section 2 – Cell Cycle and Division
9. What is binary fission? Give an example of an organism that reproduces this way.
10. Label the pie chart on the right with the following words:
a. Anaphase
#6
b. G2
#3
c. Prophase
#4
d. S phase
#2
e. Cytokenesis
#8
f. Metaphase
#5
g. G1
#1
h. Telophase
#7
11. What are the two stages of the
cell cycle?
Interphase & Cell Division
12. Which stage of the cell cycle occupies
most of the cell’s life?
Interphase
(G1 is also ok but the answer on the test will be interphase)
13.
During what phase is the DNA copied?
S-phase (synthesis of DNA phase)
14.
A disruption in what process results in cancer?
Cell Division (G0 is technically correct as welll but they will
be looking for cell division on the test.)
15. Briefly describe what happens in each phase of mitosis:
a.
Prophase:
DNA condenses to form X-shaped chromosomes; centrosomes appear, mitotic spindle forms;
nuclear envelope breaks down.
b. Metaphase:
Sister chromatids line up in the center of cell
c. Anaphase:
Sister chromatids are separated
d. Telophase:
chromosomes are now at opposite sides of cell and nuclear membrane reforms and
chromosomes unwind into chromatin
16.
What is the mitotic spindle? What is it made of?
The mitotic spindle is a series of microtubriels that are all
connect by a centrosome.
17.
What is the role of the mitotic spindle during mitosis?
The mitotic spindle separates the sister chromotids
during anaphase and helps with telophase and cytokinesis.
18. Write the number that illustrates each phase of mitosis:
a. Prophase:
#4
b. Metaphase:
#3
c. Anaphase:
#1
d. Telophase:
#5
NOTE: #2 is suppose to be interphase but
it is a bad diagram; in interphase the X shapped
chromosomes are not visible.
19. How does mitosis in plant cells differ from mitosis in animals cells?
In telophase & cytokinesis the golgi
apparatus builds a cell wall in plant cells instead of pinching in like animals
cells.
