Persuasive Writing Ideas

Gretchen Bernabei, in Why We Must Run With Scissors,
recommends using good open-ended questions to have
students free write, then talk and share stories to get ideas
flowing for topics that students know a lot about and are
passionate about.
Try Questions such as:
Can you think of a time when you were persuaded to do something you
-
didn’t want to do? How did the other person persuade you? Why did you
give in?
When did you try to persuade your friend/family member to do something
-
for you or with you? Did it work? What techniques did you use? What
should you have said/done instead?
What is something nobody would be able to persuade you to do? Why?
-
What things are you responsible for? Do you have too many
-
responsibilities? Too few? How do you feel about your responsibilities? Do
you think someone else should be more responsible?
What do you think is ‘unfair’ in your life? Why is it unfair? How could you
-
persuade someone to see how unfair it is?
What bothers you? (at home, at school, in your neighborhood, in your town,
-
in your country?) What could you do or say to persuade the people
responsible to change it?
Have you ever had to ask someone for forgiveness? Should you have been
-
forgiven? What did you say/do to try to convince this person to forgive you?
Have you ever seen someone else being treated unfairly? How can you
-
convince the person who was doing the harm to stop?
