Letter to Family
Dear Family,
I would like you to find two containers of different sizes that can hold water.
Work with your child to figure out which container holds the most. Ask ques-
tions to help your child determine the best way to judge the container’s volume.
One method your child might suggest is to fill each container with cups of water
and count the number of cups it takes to fill each one. Another method would
be to fill one container with water and pour the water from that container into
the other container. If there is still room in the other container for more water,
the container you poured from is the one that holds less. If all of the water from
the first container doesn’t fit in the second container, the first container, the one
that you poured from, holds the most. As much as possible, let your child figure
these things out rather than telling him or her.
In class I will have the children share their methods for comparing the container
volumes.
