Letter to Family
Dear Family,
I would like you to do an activity with your child using socks. Get a group of
socks of two colors, for example, white and black. Put them in one group and
don't put them in pairs. Ask your child to close his or her eyes and choose two
socks. Have the child keep doing this until he or she has picked two socks of
different colors at least a few times. Ask the child how he or she could have a
group of socks so he or she could be sure each time that the socks would be
the same color. Help the child understand that if he or she has a group of all
one color of socks, every time he or she chooses two socks with his or her
eyes closed he or she will get two socks of the same color. Make a group of
socks that is just one color. Have your child close his or her eyes and choose
two socks a few times. See what happens. Don't forget to put the two socks
back before your child chooses the next two socks.
This activity will give your child informal experience with probability. We will talk
about what happened in class so that children can share their experiences.
Your child needs to complete this activity by
