Decimals are special fractions

A decimal number usually includes a part of a whole unit. The unit is divided into 10 parts

(tenths), 100 parts (hundredths), 1000 parts (thousandths), or any ‘power of 10’ parts.

Writing this as a common fraction,
or nine-tenths

Writing it as a decimal fraction, 0.9 or ‘zero-point-
nine’ of the shape is coloured.
A decimal number has a decimal point to mark where the whole part is separated from
the fraction part of the number.

Note:
• tenths have one decimal place
• hundredths have two decimal places
• thousandths have three decimal places, and so on.

Note that the number of zeros in the denominator (bottom number) of the common fraction
is the same as the number of decimal places in the decimal.
