Chapter Pretest Analysis
Chapter Pretest Analysis
Grade 6, Chapter 7
Grade 3, Chapter 1
The Chapter 7 Pretest is designed to help assess students’ prior knowledge of addition and subtraction of
fractions and mixed numbers, as well as their ability to solve exercises that involve some skills taught in
Chapter 7. The results of this Pretest should be used in conjunction with the chapter’s Lesson Planner to map
the coordination of standards and instruction, pace the review of previously encountered content, and focus
the planning of teaching of the new grade-level objectives.
Using the Chapter 7 Pretest Item Analysis
This analysis is designed to identify test items that fall into the following categories::
Prior Knowledge Skills: adding fractions and mixed numbers in vertical and horizontal form; subtracting
fractions and mixed numbers in vertical and horizontal form. (Items 1
16)
Skills Introduced in Chapter 7: solving for a variable in addition and subtraction equations with fractions
and mixed numbers. (Items 17
20)
ITEMS
ANALYSIS
1–4
Add fractions and mixed numbers (2–3 addends) in vertical form
with renaming.
5–8
Add fractions and mixed numbers (2–3 addends) in horizontal form
with renaming.
9–12
Subtract fractions and mixed numbers in vertical form with renaming.
13–16
Subtract fractions and mixed numbers in horizontal form with renaming.
17–20
Solve for a variable in addition and subtraction equations with fractions
and mixed numbers with renaming.
Interpreting and Using the Results of the Chapter 7 Pretest
Students who correctly formulated their answers to Items 17
20 demonstrate conceptual understanding of
algebra and addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. They are well-prepared for the content
introduced in Chapter 7. These students should be assigned more than the practice sets at the end of each
lesson. They should be encouraged to apply their understanding to evaluating expressions, solving equations,
and writing and/or solving word problems using the skills that they have demonstrated. Students who had
difficulty with Items 1
16 will benefit from activities offered in Strategic Intervention on pages 221F and 221G
of the Teacher’s Edition.
