How to use it:
L o c a t e t h e o r i g i n a l k e y y o u a r e i n . F o r t h i s e x a mp l e , l e t ’ s s a y t h a t y o u a r e i n t h e k e y o f C . L e t ’ s a l s o a s s u me t h a t t h e c h o r d s i n t h e s o n g
are C major, F major and G major. Their numbers as listed at the top of the grid are 1, 6, and 8.
Now, decide which key you are moving (transposing) to and calculate the number of semi-tones (steps) you are moving up or down.
F o r t h i s e x a mp l e , l e t ’ s s a y t h a t y o u a r e t r a n s p o s i n g t o t h e k e y o f D . Ma i n t a i n i n g t h e s a me n u mb e r s a s t h e o r i g i n a l k e y o f C ( 1 , 6 a n d 8 ) ,
you will see that your new chords are D major, G major and A major.
Remember to keep the same type of chord that was in the original key. For example, if the original chord in C was a G7 instead of G
major, then your transposed chord in the key of D would be an A7. The same goes for a minor chord. A minor would become B minor.
Note that the notes in parenthesis are the flat versions (enharmonic equivalents) of the original key. An A# is the same as Bb, etc.
