Here we go strumming chords along with the melody again. You are now getting pretty comfortable with the

notes and rhythm so let's try to combine them in a little more challenging way. This technique will fill out the

song with chords and make the arrangement sound fuller and prettier.

Measure 4 has this new technique. Take a look. What we are doing is replacing a two beat note (Half Note)

with a one beat note (Quarter Note) and then in order to fill up the time for the measure, we are inserting a

strum. So what we had before was: a Half Note (2 Beats) and another Half Note (another Two Beats) equaling

four beats. Now we have Quarter Note (1 Beat), Strum (1 Beat), Quarter Note (1 Beat), Strum (1 Beat) equal-

ing the same four beats. This technique can be applied to any song with half notes, Dotted Half Notes (3 beats)

and Whole Notes (4 Beats). It takes one beat to hit the note and then you can calculate how many beats are left

over. If you replace a dotted half note, you can look at it like this: It takes one beat to hit the note. You then

have two beats left over. You can insert two strums of the chord written above the measure. Try this with Aura

Lee, Little Brown Jug and anything else you can get your hands on.
