Unit Description
Chapter 1 of Progress in Mathematics, Grade 5, provides students the opportunity to consolidate and then
extend their knowledge of place value. Students will: read and write numbers to the billions and to the
thousandths; compare and order whole numbers and decimals; add and subtract whole numbers through
hundred thousands and solve problems by using guess and test strategy.

Methods
Anticipatory Set:
To begin the unit on place value, addition, and subtraction, students will listen to the The Biggest Birthday
Cake in the World (by Elizabeth Spurr).
Assess students prior knowledge of numbers by asking questions such as:
When is a zero important?
How is a 9 different from another 9?
A: 90 is different from 900 or 9000 or $.90
Students think about it.
Introduce and Model New Knowledge:
Use smartboard with teacher created samples and resources (see individual notebook files for daily
lessons)
Provide Guided Practice:
Groupwork, classwork, games, computer activities etc., (see individual notebook files for daily lessons)
Provide Independent Practice:
small group activities and homework (see individual notebook files for daily lessons)
