Launch
5-10 minutes Notes/reflection
Using math boards, have students solve 5 + 4, in example on page 140. Show them
the shorter way to use dots to count on, with the same number sentence and then have
them try using the example provided 6 + 2 and 7 + 3. Ask students why this is
considered a more efficient method. Ask them if there is another way they might
count on, probing for a use of finger response. Utilize the math talk on page 141 to
share counting on with fingers.

 Engage in the challenge activity on page 143
 Engage in the on level activity on page 143
 Continue working on activity book page 51, finishing problems 10 – 13, and
completing problems 1 - 9.
Summarize
_20_ minutes
Facilitate a class discussion on the counting on strategy.
Ideas to question and encourage student discourse include; counting on from the first
addend, counting on from the larger addend, counting on using dots, counting on
using fingers.
Encourage language use of total, equal, and the same.
Have student groups share their work for on level and challenge differentiation tasks.
Ask students to self-assess on today’s success criteria. (possibly utilize a thumbs
up/down)
* Assign homework and remembering page 45.
Apply
During the exploration and summary ask students individually to explain or show you
the counting on strategy. Make note of student ability to explain their understanding
of the strategy, their preferred strategy (either dots or fingers) and whether any
students count on from a larger addend rather than the first. Question students as
needed.
