IV. CERTIFICATION OF REPORTING REQUIREMENTS DURING THE CAP-GAP EXTENSION:
I have read and understand the following information:
• Any change of employment must be reported to the ISSS within 10 days of the change.
• The work that I do during the cap-gap extension must be directly related to my major area of study.
• Failure to do work that is directly related to my major area of study is a violation of my F-1 status and may
adversely affect my ability to obtain immigration benefits or legally remain in the U.S.
• If it is not clear from my job description that my work is directly related to my degree, it is highly
recommended that I obtain a signed letter from my hiring official, supervisor, or manager stating how my
degree is directly related to the work I perform.
• It is my responsibility to be able to prove to the U.S. government the direct relationship between my
work and my major area of study
• If I was on the STEM OPT Extension prior to the cap-gap, I am required to work for an employer who
participates in the E-verify program, even during the cap-gap extension. It is my responsibility to confirm
that my employer uses e-Verify before beginning my employment with them. Working for a company that
does not participate in e-Verify while on the STEM OPT Extension is a violation of my F-1 status and may
adversely affect my ability to obtain immigration benefits or legally remain in the U.S.
• The amount of unemployment that I am allowed during OPT (90 days during post-completion OPT
with an additional 30 days during the 17-month STEM OPT extension and an additional 60 days during the
24-month STEM OPT extension) remains the same during the cap-gap extension; if I have already
used my unemployment time, I do not have any additional time.
• Travel outside the U.S. during the cap-gap period is not allowed. If I choose to travel at my own risk,
ISSS will be unable to provide me with a travel signature.
• The cap-gap extension ends on September 30. If the cap-gap extension caused my OPT to be
extended to September 30, I am not allowed to work past September 30 if my H-1B application has not
been adjudicated by that date.
• If my H-1B petition is withdrawn, revoked, or denied (for reasons other than fraud, misrepresentation,
or a violation of status), I will have a 60-day grace period to depart the U.S., beginning from the date of the
withdrawal, revocation, or denial.
