Activity 6
Candy necklaces
Curriculum connection:
Financial capabilities framework:
Capability: Manage money and income
Theme: Saving and Investing
Learning outcome:
• Discuss why and how people save money.
Lesson focus:
• Recognise the value of saving.
• Understand that saving involves delaying gratification to get something better in the future.
• Model good savings habits.
Activity:
A. Each student is given a packet of lifesavers and a piece of string. They are told that they can choose either
to eat the lifesavers or save them to make a necklace out of them at the end of the day, or eat some
and save some.
The students who make the best necklace (i.e. the necklace with the most lifesavers on it)
get a special prize.
B. Following this activity students discuss how this is analogous to saving: you can use your money straight
away for small things that you want or you can hold onto it and get something better in the long run.
Students discuss strategies that would have made saving their lifesavers easier – for example putting
them under their desk where they couldn’t see them, putting them out of reach, or giving them to the
teacher to hold for them – and how they could apply the same strategies to saving their money.
Note: The students should hold onto the lifesavers for a long period of time.
C. Students must earn their lifesavers throughout the day or week by completing tasks or for good behaviour.
Students can discuss the two different strategies to save more lifesavers for their necklace – earning more,
or eating less (at least a few hours) to make saving them a challenge.
Learning check:
• Can students describe why they ate or kept their life savers?
• Could they think of at least 1 way to delay eating their life savers?
• Do the students understand that the candy necklace represents money and saving?
• Do they recognise the benefit of saving money?
