States Of Matter Page 2

This part was all about solids. While I was reading, I wondered why a solid can’t go through
another solid. Then I saw in the text that they’ll just crash into each other. Did anyone else think
of a question while listening to this section?
Let’s keep reading to see if we can find an answer to that question, or to our other question: Is
there any matter we can’t see?
As you listen, keep asking yourself questions about the text. Listen for clues to the answers.
A liquid flows and changes shape freely. When you pour it into something, it takes the shape
of its container. There is no problem with getting a solid to go through a liquid. That happens
every time you go swimming!
Gases flow, too, but in a different way. If you put gas into a container, it spreads out and fills
up the whole thing. Even if you can’t see it, that’s what it is doing. Some people think that gases
are not matter, because often they are invisible. You can prove that gas is matter by blowing up a
balloon. The air you blow into it is a gas, and that gas fills up all the space inside the balloon.
I noticed that this section had information about liquids and gases. Did anyone notice the
answer to either of our questions from before?
What about our other question? Are there are types of matter that we can’t see?
Let’s read the rest of the selection.
To make it even more interesting, matter can change from one state to another. An ice cube is
a solid, but if it gets warm, it melts and becomes liquid water. If you heat up the water, it turns into
steam, which is a gas. If you cool off the steam, it becomes liquid, and if you freeze it, it turns into
solid ice.

The last part of the text was about how matter can change from one state to another. Who
thought of a question?
Who has an idea about the answer to that question?
Even though the exact answer wasn’t in the text, you used the details that were there to figure
out the answer. We call that making an inference.
