States Of Matter Page 4

As I read, I wondered if people are considered solids or liquids. The exact answer wasn’t in
the text, but it said at the beginning that all people are matter, and then it said that solids go
through liquids every time you go swimming. I made the inference that people are solids. Who
thought of another question?
Let’s keep reading to find the answer to that question.
Listen to another section of the text now. As you listen, “scan” the text with your ears. Listen
for details that make you think of questions. You might write them down as you listen.
Did anyone hear the answer to our question about putting gas inside a container?
Gases flow, too, but in a different way. If you put gas into a container, it spreads out and fills
up the whole thing. Even if you can’t see it, that’s what it is doing. Some people think that gases
are not matter, because often they are invisible. You can prove that gas is matter by blowing up a
balloon. The air you blow into it is a gas, and that gas fills up all the space inside the balloon.
That’s right. I scanned the text quickly to find the detail that told us that, and it says so right
here. Now listen to the end of the text again.
To make it even more interesting, matter can change from one state to another. An ice cube is
a solid, but if it gets warm, it melts and becomes liquid water. If you heat up the water, it turns into
steam, which is a gas. If you cool off the steam, it becomes liquid, and if you freeze it, it turns into
solid ice.

Who made an inference about this text?
As you read other informational texts, remember to ask yourself questions before you read,
and while you read, look for answers in the text. This gives you a purpose for reading, and it
can help you understand the information better. You can also scan and skim the text to find
specific words, ideas, or information. Since texts like these have so much information, taking
notes about what you are reading is very helpful, too.
