Stage 3- Learning Plan
UNIT LENGTH: 17 Days
5-1 Students review the uses of and notations for fractions, solve parts-and-whole
problems, and find fractional parts of whole numbers. They identify fractions
around them in the classroom and create displays for the Fractions, Decimals, and
Percents Museum.
5-2 Students use pattern blocks to review the role of the whole, or ONE, and to
explore mixed-number concepts. They name, and convert between, mixed
numbers and improper fractions.
5-3 Students use the Fraction-Stick Chart to find equivalent fractions and compare
fractions to 0, ½, 1, and 1 ½. They use the fraction-stick model to compare pairs
of fractions, find equivalent fractions, and continue their exploration of fraction
addition.
5-4 Students partition fraction sticks to show equivalent fractions. They define a
multiplication rule and a division rule for finding equivalent fractions.
5-5 Students change fractions to equivalent fractions having denominators of 10 or
100 and then rename these fractions as decimals. They practice rounding decimal
numbers up, down, or to the nearest specified place. They play Estimation
Squeeze to practice finding decimals between two decimals.
5-6 Students use the Probability Meter and Fraction-Stick Chart to approximate
decimal equivalents for fractions. They begin filling in a table of decimal
equivalents.
5-7 Students rename fractions as decimals by dividing the numerator by the
denominator using a calculator. They play Frac-Tac-Toe to develop automatic
recall of fraction-decimal equivalents.
5-8 Students review the meanings and uses of percents. They use a calculator to
convert fractions to decimals and decimals to percents.
5-9 Students use class data to construct and label a bar graph. They discuss circle
graphs and describe how they might be made.
5-10 Students use the Percent Circle to find the percent of the area of a circle graph
that is represented by each sector.
5-11 Students use the Percent Circle to construct circle graphs. They use journal
page data and the snack-survey data collected in Lesson 5-9. They practice
finding fractional parts of sets by playing Fraction Of.
5-12 Students read the essay “School” in the American Tour section of the SRB.
They interpret information in the text and displays and solve a series of
problems about the changing emphases in mathematics instruction. Students
explore and practice concepts involving fractions, decimals, and percents.
5-13 Review and assess students’ progress of mathematical content of Unit 5 using
Oral and Slate Review, Self-Assessment, Written Assessment, and Performance
Tasks.
