Standards of Learning for Instrumental Music
The Student will:
Demonstrate behaviors that result in increased music learning through a variety of
music activities.
Demonstrate proper playing position.
Consistently produce tones that are clear, free of tension, sustained and unwavering
in pitch.
Demonstrate the ability to adjust and match pitch.
Incorporate tempo changes and a variety of rhythms and meters being studied.
Demonstrate a variety of articulations.
Perform all major scales and selected melodic minor scales and arpeggios.
Percussionist will perform The Standard 26 American Drum Rudiments from the
N.A.R.D. open-close-open.
Wind and percussion students will perform a chromatic scale ascending and
descending throughout the practical range of the instrument (MM=72).
Use dynamic contrast and technical skills as a means of expression.
Demonstrate musical phrasing through the use of dynamic emphasis and tempo
modification.
Demonstrate ensemble skills: balance, blend, dynamics, style, intonation,
responding to the conductor’s gestures
Sight-Read music of varying styles and levels of difficulty.
Sing a part while others play or sing a contrasting part.
Perform music from a variety of cultures, styles and historical periods.
Improvise a melody to a I-IV-V-I chord progression.
Demonstrate knowledge of instrument being studied.
Identify and count rhythms using established rhythm-reading systems.
Diagnose and correct personal performance errors.
Research career and vocational options in music.
Identify, define, and apply music terms and symbols from music being studied.
Discuss relationships between music concepts and other academic disciplines.
Compare and contrast material being studied in its historical and cultural context.
