Suggestions on Opting Out of CPS Standardized Tests
This school year, students have been subjected to an unprecedented
number of tests. Many parents have decided opt their children out of taking
these tests—feeling that their children should not be subjected to so many
tests and that their child will learn more by reading a book or exploring an
academic interest during that time.
If significant numbers of parents decide to opt their children out, that will
impact the ability of Chicago Public Schools to continue giving these tests.
Inform yourself about the standardized tests your child is taking and what
they are used for. Your child’s classroom teachers, as well as school
administrators, should be able to provide you with this information.
Once you decide which tests you feel are excessive and/or harmful to your
child’s education, write a letter to the principal exercising your right to
exempt your child from these tests. You can use the template below or
write one for yourself. According to the CPS Office of Assessment, as of
January 2013, a letter from a parent is sufficient for opting out of any
standardized test or assessment tool.
It is possible that your decision may solicit resistance by administrators or
that you may be asked to reconsider opting your child out of testing. Be
prepared to defend your decision by becoming fully informed about
standardized testing.
You should also approach and inform your child’s classroom teacher so
they understand and support your decision.
