Dear (their full name),
First Paragraph – State the reason for the letter, the specific position or type of work for which
you are applying, and the specific company you are applying to. Indicate from which resource
you learned of the opening (Career Services, newspaper, professor, professional journal,
someone you networked with).
Second Paragraph – in 4-6 sentences indicate why you are interested in the position, the
organization, its products of services and what you can do for the employer. Sell your skills.
Explain how your academic background makes you a qualified candidate. Refer to your resume.
Point out relevant employment, internships, or volunteer experiences and specific achievements
or qualifications that will excite the reader to read your resume.
Third Paragraph – This is an optional paragraph. If you have extensive relevant work
experience and exceptional educational qualifications, you may want to use a paragraph for each.
Remember, you are not to repeat your entire resume here. This is just to highlight enough to
interest the reader.
Final Paragraph – Indicate that you desire an interview, information on any openings, etc., and
request an application. Indicate your willingness to furnish additional information about your
qualifications. You can also give your contact information i.e. your phone number and email. Be
sure to thank them for their consideration and state that you look forward to hearing from them.
