Position Description:
This position is in the Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) and Antimicrobial Resistance Program within
the Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) division of the
Tennessee Department of Health (TDH). This position is currently funded from year to year through CDC
cooperative agreements (grants). Some travel is required. Job duties will include:
Leading, promoting and supporting antimicrobial stewardship efforts in healthcare facilities across
the spectrum of healthcare in Tennessee (e.g., acute care hospitals, nursing homes), using tools
such as the recently released NQF antimicrobial stewardship playbook
Participating in analysis and interpretation of National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) annual
survey on core elements of antimicrobial stewardship in TN facilities.
Leading, promoting and supporting antimicrobial stewardship efforts in the community, targeting
retail pharmacists, as well as certain provider groups (e.g., pediatricians, family physicians, nurse
practitioners, dentists) and schools of pharmacy
Providing technical support to facilities to start reporting antimicrobial use data to the NHSN
Antimicrobial Use (AU) module, including assistance in validating data.
Monitoring collection, data quality, and analysis of antimicrobial use data reported to the NHSN
AU module
Participating in data collection, entry, cleaning, analysis and interpretation for antimicrobial
stewardship projects, including a point prevalence study on antimicrobial use and
appropriateness
Participating in guiding the analysis, and interpretation of a commercial dataset on outpatient
antimicrobial use (from IMS-Health) to better understand how to prioritize interventions (e.g.,
certain providers/provider groups/ certain geographic locations) within TN.
Serving on the Antimicrobial Stewardship subcommittee of the multidisciplinary advisory group on
HAI and Antimicrobial Resistance
Collaborating with the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety, Tennessee Pharmacy Coalition, the
Tennessee Pharmacists Association, Q-source, the State Public Health Laboratory, clinical
laboratories and other partners on antimicrobial stewardship activities
Preparing and delivering presentations on antimicrobial stewardship to local, state, and national
partners
Participating in outbreak investigations as needed, especially if medications are implicated (e.g.,
intrinsic or extrinsic contamination)
Assisting in the preparation of grant applications, progress reports, scientific articles and
presentations, and other deliverables
Performing programmatic project management activities related to antimicrobial stewardship
projects
