Students can use base-ten blocks to model decimal thousandths instead, al-
though for many students, extensive earlier work with whole numbers using base-
ten blocks can interfere. Students might have diffi culty, for example, calling a large
cube 1 instead of 1000, yet this is necessary in order to model thousandths. Blocks
can be used to model thousandths if the large cube is worth 1, so the fl at can be
worth 0.1, the rod can be worth 0.01, and the small cube can be worth 0.001.
