A Family Newsletter
Greetings, Family!
In science class, we are beginning a unit called “Magnets.” During
this time, students will learn about the force of magnetism and the
properties of magnets. They will find out which objects are attracted
by magnets, determine the strongest magnet in the classroom, and
turn an iron nail into a temporary magnet.
You can make science come alive for your child in and around your
home. Point out the appliances and devices around your home that
contain magnets. These may include electric can openers and door
locks on furniture. Experiment with refrigerator magnets to see what
else they stick to. Your participation can make science interesting and
real for your child.
During the first section of this unit, your child will bring a magnet
home. Please help your child to determine which objects in the home
the magnet attracts. As you do, keep in mind that it is best not to
put magnets near televisions, VCRs, computers, discs, or tapes, as the
magnet could harm the electronics within these devices.
Finally, we can always use your help in the classroom. Do you or
other family members have a particular interest or special experience
with science? Would you be able to help with activities? If so, please
fill out the form below and have your student return it to class.
Thank you very much for your help!
