The Numeracy strategies in this chapter are designed to develop the student’s mental capabilities. They are based on the Ministry of
Education Numeracy Professional Development Projects books 5 and 6. Teachers should ensure they are familiar with the specific learning
outcomes for each strategy and that the necessary teaching is completed before setting the tasks given here. Teachers will also need to select
and use activities from Book 4 ‘Teaching Number Knowledge’.
The strategies start at Advanced Counting. The teacher will need to carefully match the given activities to the student’s knowledge stage as
shown by NumPA testing.
