ADDITION OF WHOLE NUMBERS
In this section we will look at some strategies you can use to answer whole number problems.
In most of them you will need to find answers mentally, that is, by doing the working in your
head.
STARTING OFF (Reminder)
An important skill is to ‘make up’ numbers to the tidy numbers 10, 100, 1000 in your head.
Method

‘make up to 10’
Example: if 6 + ¤ = 10, ¤ = 4

‘make up to 100’
Example: if 24 + ¤ = 100,

make the tens digit up to 9, 2

make the units digit up to 10, 4

So, 24 + 76 = 100.

‘make up to 1000’
Example: if 238 + ¤ = 1000,

make up the hundreds digit to 9, 2

So, 238 + 762 = 1000.
