NUMERACY STRATEGIES
(Chapter 1)
EXERCISE 1B.11
1
Use the above strategy to find the age differences: (If necessary, use a number line.)
a
From 1863 to 1928
b
From 1754 to 1806
c
From 1903 to 1988
2
Try to find these year differences without the use of a number line:
a
From 1883 to 1945
b
From 1956 to 2005
c
From 825 to 1009
3
Knowing the month of birth can be important. For example, if Karen is born in August
2005 and Tom in January 2006 there is not a full year between their birthdays.
Find these age differences (in years) being careful with the month of birth:
a
From 18=06=1909 to 23=03=1987
b
From 23=11=1879 to 14=01=1935
c
From 6=08=1965 to 14=09=2003
d
From 23=12=1929 to 21=07=1991
‘Three or more at a time’
Sometimes the combinations of numbers being subtracting will allow us to add two or more
together to make tidy numbers before we subtract.
For example, Heather had $734 in her bank account and then made two withdrawals;
one of $78 and one of $12. How much has she left in the account?
To solve the problem we can add $78 and $12 together before subtracting.
So, $734 ¡ $78 ¡ $12 = $734 ¡ $90 = $644.
EXERCISE 1B.12
1
Use the above strategy to find:
a
234 ¡ 56 ¡ 14
b
789 ¡ 89 ¡ 11
c
456 ¡ 28 ¡ 22
d
892 ¡ 45 ¡ 35
e
258 ¡ 47 ¡ 33
f
933 ¡ 123 ¡ 277
‘Problems like 67
¡ ¤ =
34 ’
Problems like the one above can be solved by finding 67 ¡ 34 or 34 + ¤ = 67.
For example: The ride at the Fun Park had 53 people on it. After the first three unloading
stops there were 28 people left on. How many had got off?
To solve the problem we look at 53 ¡ ¤ = 28.
We re-think the problem as 28 + ¤ = 53 or 53 ¡ 28 = ¤.
EXERCISE 1B.13
1
Use whichever method above you find easier to solve these problems:
a
Brittany gives some of her
85
cents to Alice and she now has
40
cents. How much
did she give to Alice?
b
A carpenter starts the day with
500
nails and ends with
64
. How many did he use?
c
A journey is 784 km and Sam has 96 km to complete it.
How far has he travelled?
d
The crowd at the netball numbered
1036
at the
start of the game and
593
at the end. How many
people had left?
