NUMERACY STRATEGIES
(Chapter 1)
STRATEGIES FOR ADDING
‘The bigger number first’
When adding two numbers it is often easier to start with the larger number and add the smaller
one to it. For example, to find 7 + 38 it may be easier to find 38 + 7 instead.
EXERCISE 1A.2
1
Use materials to help find these:
a
b
c
3 + 8 and 8 + 3
6 + 9 and 9 + 6
2 + 12 and 12 + 2
d
e
f
5 + 18 and 18 + 5
4 + 36 and 36 + 4
7 + 45 and 45 + 7
2
Find these, starting with the larger or largest number:
a
b
c
d
7 + 15
12 + 46
9 + 73
5 + 27 + 6
e
f
g
h
8 + 7 + 31
3 + 42 + 5
6 + 4 + 59
5 + 8 + 68
3
Use the same method to solve these problems:
a
Mary has 4 sweets in her left pocket, 8 in her right pocket and 42 in the bag at
home. How many sweets does she have altogether?
b
Ravi has walked 2 km today, 9 km yesterday and 24 km last week.
How far has he walked altogether?
c
Hana banked $4 last week, $34 the week before and $8 three weeks ago.
How much had she banked in total?
d
Joe has 28 stamps on page one of his album, 14 on page two and 36 on page three.
What is the total number of stamps he has on these three pages?
‘Change unknown’
In this strategy we count on from a given number until we reach the answer.
For example,
Danny has
4
marbles and wins some more to
make a total of . How many does he win?
9
We write
4 +
¤
= 9
. Starting at
4
we count
on
5
to reach . So, he wins
9
5
marbles.
EXERCISE 1A.3
1
Use materials to help you find the unknown number in:
a
2 + ¤ = 7
b
3 + ¤ = 9
c
4 + ¤ = 8
d
3 + ¤ = 5
e
f
g
h
6 + ¤ = 10
5 + ¤ = 8
1 + ¤ = 7
7 + ¤ = 9
2
Use the same method, but do these mentally:
a
b
c
d
3 + ¤ = 8
11 + ¤ = 17
6 + ¤ = 14
3 + ¤ = 11
e
4 + ¤ = 13
f
8 + ¤ = 19
g
5 + ¤ = 12
h
7 + ¤ = 13
3
Use the same method to solve these problems:
a
Hira collects 8 shells today which means that she now has 17 shells. How many
shells did she have before today?
b
Manny’s goal is to score 18 points. If he has already scored 7, how many more
does he need to reach his goal?
