Service
The student who serves:
1. Volunteers and provides dependable and well organized assistance, is gladly available, and is
willing to sacrifice to offer assistance
2. Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
3. Cheerfully and enthusiastically renders any request service to the school
4. Is willing to represent the class or school in inter-class and inter-scholastic competition
5. Does committee and staff work without complaint
6. Participates in some activity outside of school, for example, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, church
groups, volunteer services for the elderly, poor, or other disadvantaged
7. Mentors person in the community or student in other schools
8. Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students
Character
A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: respect, responsibility,
trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. In addition, it can also be said that the
student of character:
1. Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
2. Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise,
and stability)
3. Upholds principles of morality and ethics
4. Cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, halls,
etc.
5. Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability
6. Regularly shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others
7. Observes instructions and rules, is punctual, and faithful both inside and outside the
classroom
8. Has powers of concentration, self-discipline, and sustained attention as shown by
perseverance and application to studies
9. Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work,
and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others
10. Actively helps rid the school of bad influences or environment
Selection Process
A. Must keep and maintain 3.5 GPA for 3 consecutive semesters. (NHS Scholarship Guidelines)
B. Adviser and Administrative Assistant will determine scholarship eligibility.
C. Applications are sent to eligible students.
D. Faculty committee consisting of Principal, NHS Adviser and two (2) teachers, will review
candidate applications and accept or deny applicants based on the scoring rubric.
Acceptance is based on:
1. Student must meet 3.5 GPA requirements. (A. above)
2. Students must score a minimum of 10 points on each rubric sheets, thus creating a
minimum score of 40 points total.
3. It is the students’ responsibility to follow-on on all scoring rubrics to see that the
deadlines are being met.
4. Applicants will receive written notice as to their acceptance and/or reason for denial.
E. Appeal process-any appeals as to the decisions of the NHS faculty committee, must be
made to the Superintendent of Schools within a 72 hour period from the receipt of the
committees’ decision letter.
