She’s Gone
Sermon
“Wouldn’t it have been nice if _________________ could have heard all this
praise”. Perhaps, but I think he didn’t need to hear it. This will be the third Memorial
Service for ____________; and he had no need for any of them, but we do. He didn’t
need to hear these words of praise and love, but we need to speak them. Our memory of
him will be his Memorial.
A memory is a thought to hold onto; but the Truth is a thought that embraces you and all
others. Know this "truth of Life" and be uplifted: Life is infinite. There is but One Life -
God's Life, my life, your life, Jay's life: it is all one infinite life. That Life never ends. It is
what we are and what we shall always be. And there is One Love, here and now as
before, for all that recognize that One Perfect Life within and through us, as each of us
now.
Dr. Barclay Johnson throwing open the gates of Hell & Heaven.
It is by Love that we accept the unacceptable. It is by loving that we overcome fear. It is
by loving that we rejoice through our tears.
“I think I know why times of death, transition or transformation if you wish, are difficult
for me: it is because I don’t’ wish to experience them. I don't wish to transcend, or even to
be transformed. I don’t wish to become a dragonfly or a butterfly. I think I may prefer to
remain an inch-worm! Like a caterpillar, give me an inch and I’ll take a yard, but don’t ask
me to take a flying leap! I prefer to take one step at a time, and live fully one day at a
time. I would follow the advice of Ralph Waldo Emerson – find the journey’s end in each
step of the way.
We have but one moment in which to achieve a full measure of life; and I regret losing
one moment to regret, one step to fear, even one inch along the eternal pathway. We
shared so much of that which can be measured; but we share still that which is beyond
measure. So, at the death of a friend, a loved one: I would remember that I did not die,
nor has my love, nor all that we share. I ask you to perceive the unfolding of your life,
and embrace the people who face death. Let’s remember that even though death
involves an immeasurably large leap of faith, it too is but one more step along the way.
And so, here we are again; sadder, but wiser? I don’t know about you, but I’m just
sadder – no wiser for having confronted death time and again. It seems to me that death
is the lasting mystery of Life. We come up with a variety of theories and beliefs that
make up our religious experience; but I can’t say that I know what the experience of
death is or is to be for you and me. I don’t know what to say of ____________, now that
she has experienced death; so I’ll have to confine my statements to what I know of her
experience of Life.
Just what has happened here? How could he be gone, and where did he go? The
answer to these questions is determined by your belief about God. If you believe there is
a God up in heaven, then he has finally answered the call to go onward and upward. If
you believe that
“in my Father’s house are many
mansions” then you know that he has
gone to prepare a place for you. If you believe that
“the kingdom of god is within
you”,
and that you are within God, then he didn’t go anywhere. He is with us now, even as God
is with us, around us, through us, as us now.
“Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe
in God, believe also in
me”. (Jn.14:1)
“I and my Father are
one”. (Jn.10:30) These are
the words of Jesus, and no truer words were ever spoken. And if you believe in an infinite
God, and a universal and eternal Life, then you must believe that the spirit and life you
knew as __________ is alive and well, for that is what we believe about God. I believe
that there is only one Life, an infinite Life, the Life of God; and I believe we are all living
that One Life. I can no more believe in the death of ____________ than I can imagine the
end of Life, the death of God. Those who loved him, which is to say that they perceived
