THE BASICS
1.
Q.
What is the Property Tax Reimbursement Program?
A.
The Property Tax Reimbursement Program was designed to allow qualified senior
and disabled New Jersey homeowners and mobile home owners to have their
property taxes frozen. The level at which the property taxes are frozen depends on
the year the claimant first becomes eligible.
2.
Q.
How does the program work?
A.
The first year that you satisfy all the eligibility requirements will be your base year.
If you remain eligible in succeeding years, you will be reimbursed for any increase
in the amount of property taxes paid over the base year amount. If you are a
qualified mobile home owner you will use 18% of your site fees due and paid in
place of property taxes.
3.
Q.
What if my property taxes don’t increase after 1997?
A.
If your property taxes don’t go up then you will not receive a reimbursement for that
year.
4.
Q.
How do I claim my property tax reimbursement?
A.
Claimants will be required to file an application on an annual basis and will be
required to provide proof of the amount of property taxes due and paid.
5.
Q.
When is the due date for filing the application?
A.
You must file your application for the property tax reimbursement no later than
March 15 of the year following the year for which you are claiming the
reimbursement. For example, to claim a reimbursement for calendar year 1998,
you must file your application by March 15, 1999.
6.
Q.
When will I receive my property tax reimbursement check?
A.
If you file your application by March 15, including all the necessary attachments
and information, your reimbursement check will be mailed on July 15.
