APPLICATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR A
BOARDING HOUSE
CODE-101
Any building or part of a building, other than a hotel, used as, maintained as, advertised as, or held out to be an
enclosure where meals or lunches are furnished for a consideration to five (5) or more transients who have
sleeping accommodations upon the premises, or to five (5) or more boarders.
Please read and follow these instructions carefully. A correctly completed application will expedite the issuance
of the business license.
1.
A completed miscellaneous application (BRA-4) is required. (attached)

2.
A Corporation, Limited Liability Company or a Limited Partnership doing business in the District of
Columbia must be in good standing. For additional information, please call (202) 442-4430 or visit the
One Stop Business Center located on the 1 st Floor, Room #1100.
3.
A Certificate of Occupancy is required for a commercial place of business in the District of Columbia. For
additional information, please call (202) 442-4567 or visit the Permit Issuance Branch located on the 2 nd
Floor, Room #2300
4.
A Tax Registration Certificate is required from the office of Tax and Revenue. For additional information,
please call (202) 727-4829 or visit the Tax Customer Center located on the 1 st flood room #1110.
An approval from the Rent Accommodations Office, located in the One Stop Business Center on the 1 st

An approval from the Housing Code Enforcement Division. This can be obtained from the One Stop
Business Center. For additional information, please call (202) 442-4600.
7.
A current Health Certificate is required from the Department of Health. For additional information, please
call (202) 535-2500 or visit the office located in 51 N Street N.E., Washington, D.C. 6 th Floor, Room #524.
8.
Those businesses who use a private hauler recycler must submit the name. Address and customer number
of their current solid waste collector/recycling company.
