I.  
Purpose:  
 
 
The   p urpose   o f   a   t elephone   i nterview   i s   t o   i dentify   t he   t op   c andidates   y ou   w ant   t o   p ursue.    
Telephone   i nterviews   a re   a n   e fficient   a nd   e ffective   m ethod   f or   r educing   t he   c andidate   p ool   t o   t hose  
most   q ualified   a nd   w hose   p ersonal   a ttributes   f it   t he   c ulture   o f   t he   d epartment   a nd   A dams   S tate  
University.  
 
 
The   b rief   i nterview   c an   b e   u sed   t o   e xplain   t he   j ob   i n   m ore   d etail,   g auge   t he   c andidate’s  
interests,   c larify   t he   c andidate’s   w ork   h istory   a nd   e xperience,   a nd   a nswer   t heir   q uestions.  
 
 
II.  
Planning:  
 
Set   u p   a ppointment   w ith   c andidate,   p roviding   a t   l east   o ne   w eek’s   n otice.     M ake   s ure   t he  
number   a t   w hich   y ou   r eached   t he   c andidate   i s   t he   n umber   t o   b e   c alled   f or   t he   i nterview.    
Also,   c oordinate   t he   i nterview   w ith   t he   a vailability   o f   c ommittee   m embers.  
 
Schedule   t he   i nterview   c all   f or   n o   m ore   t han   3 0   m inutes.  
 
Determine   i f   a ll   c ommittee   m embers   w ill   p articipate   i n   t he   i nterviews   o r   i f   o nly   o ne   o r  
certain   m embers   w ill   b e   a sking   q uestions.     R egardless,   a ll   c ommittee   m embers   m ust   b e  
present   f or   t he   i nterviews   a nd   a ll   m ust   b e   i ntroduced.  
 
Review   t he   c andidate’s   a pplication   m aterials   i ncluding   a ny   r eferences   p rior   t o   i nterview.  
 
Prepare   q uestions.     A ll   c andidates   s hould   b e   a sked   t he   s ame   q uestions.     D etermine   t he  
order   o f   q uestions   t o   b e   a sked.  
 
Reserve   a   c onference   r oom   a nd   t est   e quipment   ( speaker   p hone).     M ake   s ure   t here   a re   n o  
conflicts   w ith   t he   r oom   o r   i nterruptions.     A ll   p agers   a nd   c ell   p hones   m ust   b e   t urned   o ff.  
 
Review   e valuation   i nstrument   o r   r ating   f orm   w ith   c ommittee   p rior   t o   t he   i nterview.  
 
Keep   i n   m ind   t hat   t he   l ack   o f   n on-­‐verbal   c ommunication   i s   a   l imiting   f actor   f or   b oth   t he  
committee   a nd   t he   c andidate.  
 
III.  
Conducting   t he   I nterview  
 
Call   c andidate   a t   t he   s cheduled   t ime.  
 
Introduce   c ommittee   t o   c andidate   a nd   b riefly   e xplain   t he   i nterview   p rocess.
