Suggested mnemonic
(They take a lot of thought because there are a lot of rules. If you take the time to understand and remember these
mnemonics, they’ll save your life!! Practice writing these rules down using the mnemonics several times.)
For solubility rules:
Mnemonic #1: For Solubles
Not All Attractive Fun Cheerleaders Buy Indecent Shorts (See the Soluble column below)
The mnemonics for the exceptions are given next to the exceptions. The mnemonics vary for each exception.
Soluble

Nitrates

Acetates

Ammonium

Fluorides
Sr Ba Ca Mg Pb (SrBaCa met Mg, Ag’s sister, at the Pub)
Chlorides
Hg Ag Pb
(Hg & Ag went to the Pub)
Bromides
Hg Ag Pb

Iodides
Hg Hg Ag Pb
(Hg, Hg’s twin, & Ag went to the Pub)
Sulfates
Sr Ba Ca Pb
(SrBaCa went to the Pub by himself because
Ag found out about Mg!—SrBaCa was dating
Ag first)
Note: you need to remember there are 2 Hg’s:

and Hg
. Hg is Hg
. Hg
is Hg’s twin.

Note: Just remember that alkali metals are always soluble!! They are not included in the mnemonic (too many A’s for the
mnemonic to work !
)
You’ll need to come up with mnemonics yourself for the generally insolubles and insolubles (and their exceptions) as
I don’t have one.
Mnemonic #2: For Strong Acids
No Cool Cheerleaders In Chemistry Buy Indecent Shorts (See the order in which I listed the strong acids. You will need to
remember that they all have H in front with SO
having 2 H’s.)

For the bases, you’ll need to come up with a mnemonic on your own. These might be easy enough to remember
without a mnemonic?
