Dear Parent:

A child who attends the _______________ childcare center has been diagnosed with

shigellosis, a disease caused by the Shigella bacteria. The symptoms of shigellosis may

include diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Most Shigella

infections are the result of the bacterium passing from stools usually via inadequately

washed hands of one person to the mouth of another person.

Children or any member of your household who develop any of these symptoms should

be tested for shigellosis by having a stool specimen examination. This can be done

through your local health department. [Stool specimen kits may be picked up and

returned to the childcare center. We will make arrangements for them to be delivered to

the health department.]* If anyone in your household tests positive for shigellosis, your

physician may want to prescribe medication. Please do not send children to the center if

they have diarrhea.
