2011 ELECTRONIC FILING--MODERNIZED E-FILE
Modernized e-File Highlights
In taxable year 2009, the Federal/State e-File program began the phase in of modernized e-File (MeF). Unlike
legacy e-File, the MeF system uses XML as its programming base, supports web-based filing and offers a plat-
form for many improvements to the current legacy e-File system. The table below identifies many of the differ-
ences between the legacy and modernized e-File system.
NOTE: A return that has been accepted by the department will go through an additional series of internal business
rules. A return that fails any of the internal business rules will suspend for additional review. This may cause de-
lays in processing the taxpayer’s return. The department will notify the taxpayer if they need additional informa-
tion to verify a line item adjustment or to verify taxes withheld. This process may delay a taxpayer’s refund, in-
crease a taxpayer’s refund/balance due, or reduce a taxpayer’s refund/balance due.
